RECLUSIVE San community members living in Tsholotsho are illegally hunting and killing endangered species.
This was revealed by academic, Keith Phiri during a media training workshop organised by Cultural Information Trust (CIT) in Hwange.
Phiri said he launched a research on the San people living in Tsholotsho where he discovered that they haven’t done away with their past of indulging game meat.
According to Phiri, among the animals they like to devour include the python and tortoise.
“They turn these into mince meat and they love their meat,” said Phiri.
He also said they hunt at the dead of the night.
“The secretly hunt endangered species at night. So they keep to themselves so that their activities will not be unearthed,” he said.
“They do not associate with Ndebele or Kalanga people because they accuse them of snitching on them to authorities.
“So it’s a closed group that does not interact with other groups in Tsholotsho and when you try to investigate they move to another area. This is how they are,” added Phiri.
Zimbabwe has a small population of San people and they are mostly located in Matabeleland North province.
