DINDE villagers in Hwange were left shell-shocked last week when they discovered that their village heroes’ acre had been tampered with some graves having been drilled into in the middle of the night.

When the Zambezi Times visited Dinde, it established that there were some holes on the sides of the graves.

The most stunning sight was a big dugout on one grave which had a full tombstone. Some villagers suspected that, the yet to be identified diggers wanted to steal the tombstone.

Dinde villagers set aside a place to bury their kith and kin as a form of respect and unity in the village.

Dinde villager, Owen Sibanda said he was still in shock from the incident.

“It is a frightening incident, I have never seen it in my life. I hope, one day we will know who are the people doing this. It’s not good to disturb the dead. Police must investigate the matter,” said Sibanda.

However, one Darlington claimed to have a clue of what transpired.

“I saw some men with a motor vehicle, white in colour roaming around the cemetery. The men were in the company of a police officer. When I tried to find out, I was blocked by the police officer,” he claimed.

Having discovered that they had been seen, the unknown people reportedly drove away.

The Zambezi Times established that, the unknown crew told the curious villager, that they were at work investigating something hence Darlington was not supposed interfere.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda could not be reached for comment.

However, the area village head Lambo Tshuma told this publication, that, the incident was very disrespectful and a matter of concern.

“I am not happy, and everyone in the village is not happy about what happened at the graves. It seems they wanted to dig or drill. So far we don’t know the real intention of those people. You cannot tell whether it’s for ritual, theft or mineral exploration. Why the graves? That is our question,” said Tshuma. Police attended the scene and interviewed villagers without any breakthrough except the testimony of one, Darlington
