In a significant move toward addressing the challenges facing rural youth, the Zimbabwe Youth Council (ZYC) and Teen Rescue Mission (TRM) have launched a partnership aimed at bolstering economic empowerment, health education, and vocational training. This collaboration is seen as a vital step in combating poverty, youth crime, drug abuse, and teen pregnancy in underserved communities.
During a recent visit to Murehwa rural communities, Tonderai Motsi, ZYC’s Director of Finance and Administration, emphasized the council’s commitment to exploring funding opportunities for youth projects. “We are dedicated to supporting initiatives that enhance the welfare of young people in remote areas,” Motsi stated. He highlighted that the partnership aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), and 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
The partnership aims to implement several key projects, including vocational training, entrepreneurship development, and community engagement activities. Motsi expressed optimism about the potential impact of these initiatives, stating, “I believe this partnership will enhance our impact and provide necessary skills to vulnerable youths.”
TRM Director Abraham Matuka echoed this sentiment, describing the partnership as a milestone for both organizations. “This initiative not only strengthens service delivery but also contributes to our goal of achieving an upper-middle-income society by 2030,” Matuka remarked. He praised ZYC for fostering youth exchange programs that encourage idea-sharing among young people, stating, “These exchanges will help our youth develop holistically in every area of their lives.”
Established to promote youth empowerment and participation, the ZYC serves as a vital link between the government and youth organizations, facilitating their involvement in both national and international events. The council aims to coordinate and supervise youth activities from grassroots to national levels, ensuring that young voices are heard and valued in the development process.
As the ZYC and TRM embark on this partnership, the focus remains on creating sustainable solutions that empower young people and foster a brighter future for rural communities in Zimbabwe. By addressing pressing issues such as unemployment, substance abuse, and early pregnancies, this initiative holds the promise of transforming the lives of countless youths and contributing to the overall development of society.
