BINGA South is set to open a coal mine as the government intensifies efforts to develop the area.
Joshua Muzamba, Binga Rural District Council (RDC) Chief Executive, exclusively briefed The Zambezi Times of the development.
“Plans are afoot to establish a coal mine in Chitongo,” said Muzamba.
He also said the council plans to upgrade clinics in the district.
“We have several major projects currently underway in Binga South. These include and not limited to Chibila clinic, Chipale clinic upgrading of several primary schools, piped water schemes for a number of primary schools,” said Muzambi.
Villagers said they welcome the planned developments, hoping that they won’t remain promises.
“A coal mine will create a lot of jobs for us. This is a good development and we are looking forward to it. I hope a lot of us will gain from the initiative,” said one Alex Munkuli.
Another villager Shylet Moyo said: “We used to travel as far as ST Lukes in Lupane to get our children vaccinated and now if they improve our clinics it will help us a lot. We are mothers and wives and we have a lot of household chores to do. So travelling to ST Lukes and coming back to look after your children and husband takes a toll on us”.
Binga is one of the most underdeveloped districts in the country, battling with massive penury, suffering and poor infrastructure.
