SOUTH Africa is surreptitiously benefiting from Zimbabwe’s iconic Victoria Falls, at least according to a local academic.
Keith Phiri, a lecturer at Lupane State University said on Tuesday during a workshop organised by a Matabeleland based media organisation that South Africa is abusing it’s economic power to benefit from Victoria Falls.
“South Africa is an economic power house in Africa and it is using that to benefit from Victoria Falls,” said Phiri.
“When tourists arrive in South Africa they are told we welcome you and we will take you to one of our nice places in the country and they will be meaning Victoria Falls.
“Many Western people think Victoria Falls is in South Africa,” he added.
Victoria Falls is one of the world’s recognised seven wonders.
It generates a lot of foreign currency via tourism earnings.
Phiri further said journalists should promote environmental issues.
“It is important to report on environment and educate people on what they should do to reduce climate change,” said Phiri.
