A Hwange chief has decried politicisation of developmental programmes, saying this is the reason why the area remains underdeveloped.
Chief Dingane Nelukoba, one of the five chiefs in Hwange, and rules over Dete and the area from Kapane river up to Fatima briefed a visiting entourage of journalists this week that politics has derailed development programmes.
“I have to say this when we talk about development you hear some say we oppose because we are MDC. Others say we are Zanu PF and so on,” said chief Nerukopa.
“At the end of the day no development takes place because of bickering,” he added.
The Chief went on to tell journalists that there is massive water shortage in his jurisdiction.
“This is a serious issue. Dams are dry and boreholes are dry. People and their livestock are suffering,” he said.
“If you look at Emasabatheni there is no water at all. A lot of cattle have perished.”
Nelukoba further said Covid-19 induced national lockdown will badly affect education in the district.
“Look, we had students in secondary school who could not even write their own names. What will happen now with this lockdown,” he asked.
He also said wildlife and humans conflict is rife in Hwange.
“When l was in Harare recently l was briefed that elephants had killed two or three people,” he said.
“When l called the police this other day they told me that they are busy tracking down the elephants. They move around in herds of 60 to 100.
“But after having such a calamity there is no compensation from the parks or council. They only fire warning shots in the air to scare the elephants to move away.”
