THE Women Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCOZ) Hwange Chapter recently conducted a clean-up exercise at Empumalanga Township as part of the programme which was initiated by President Emmerson Mnangangwa to clean up the environment.
The exercise is held every first Friday of the month.
However, the exercise which was disrupted by Covid-19 pandemic is slowly returning back to normal following the easing of lockdown regulations by government.
The clean-up exercise which was headed by WCOZ Environment Cluster started at the Gajitunda beer garden, followed by local Board offices in Mpumalanga then the Mpumalanga Shopping centre as well as the highway to the Empumalanga turn off .
The WCOZ Hwange Chapter chairperson Catherine Madondo said the exercise is just the beginning of work of mercy initiatives by Hwange women.
“We have started the works of mercy by volunteering to clean the business area of our community,” she said.
Madondo said the clean-up exercise shows that WCOZ members are empowered to make a difference through cleaning the environment.
“We want make a difference in the environment. We encourage clean homes as women and we will be happy to be joined by others who want to make a difference in Hwange,” said Madondo.
In the Environment Cluster Madondo said the women are fighting for the right to a clean and healthy environment and this includes ensuring that proper standards are allowed for the storage, transportation and disposal of toxic waste.
WCOZ is a women pressure group which focuses on the promotion of women’s rights, its mission is to build and coordinate a women’s movement for collective action through networking, lobbying, advocacy, resource mobilisation and capacity building guided by good governance, rapid and emergency response mechanisms and strong institutional capacity.
The organisation runs various clusters which include Environment, Health Media, Economic, Peace, Culture and Education cluster where women are encouraged to participate in.
