THE Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) President Desmond Maringwa has urged current footballers to be entrepreneurs and seek a second carrier while still playing football.
In an interview with this publication, Maringwa said life after football is often very difficult for most footballers in Zimbabwe.
“Football life is very short and footballers need to be skillful and venture into business where they use their hands to work for their families and themselves”he said.
Maringwa who was in Hwange applauded the efforts made by Twalumba bricks, a brick moulding project which was initiated by a former Hwange based footballer Allan Twalumba Sibanda.
Twalumba was a goal keeper for Hwange Juniors FC, Tsholotsho Pirate FC and ZPC Hwange FC but has ventured into brick moulding business where he sells his bricks to Binga, Victoria Falls and Hwange town.
“Twalumba is doing a very good project and we are using his project to encourage other players to do likewise,his project will benefit him and the community around him as well”.
“Thumbs up to Twalumba,we will try to help him so that his business grows ” he said.
He further said that Covid-19 pandemic has hampered most football careers calling on football players to up their game in entrepreneurship.
“Two years without playing football has disadvantaged most players but they should not give up in starting own projects” he said.
Life has been tough for sports professionals reliant on winning bonuses, salaries and travelling allowances to survive. Zimbabwean football clubs rely on gate takings at matches, so if they don’t play, they don’t earn.
