MORE than 3.61 billion people worldwide have received a dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, equal to about 47 percent of the world population, the latest data on the pandemic reveals.
At least 22.93 million vaccines are now administered each day while only 2.3% of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose, according to Our World in Data.
World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted an improvement in the global vaccination drive.
“The Covid-19 vaccination situation is improving slowly, with significant vaccine supplies expected for the last quarter of the year for middle- and low-income countries.
“But the scale of what is needed is huge, in terms of numbers of vaccinators, engagement with communities, and ongoing monitoring and health systems strengthening. And of course, Covid-19 is not the only health challenge we face,” said Dr Ghebreyesus.
He was giving a presentation on the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunisation.
As of October 4, Zimbabwe had a total of 3 117 895 people who had received their first dose while 2 322 862 are already fully vaccinated.
Zimbabwe is targeting to reach herd immunity by year end.While authorities had initially indicated that vaccination was voluntary, President Mnangagwa and his deputy Constantine Chiwengwa are on record making it compulsory for everyone particularly civil servants to be inoculated.
