THE government is living up to its promise to transform the livelihoods of the marginalised San community with the latest being the commitment to construct two primary and secondary schools in Tsholotsho.

This comes after over 4000 people in the district, the San included, benefited from the issuance of Identity Documents during a recent special exercise by the Civil Registry Department.

The Education ministry has already begun consultation for the best sites where the schools can be placed.

In a post Cabinet briefing, Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa said a number of projects meant to uplift the San communities have since been identified.

“Treasury will fund the construction of two primary and secondary schools for the Tjawo, out of the 50 schools which it has undertaken to finance. Over 5 000 national identity documents have been issued by the Registrar-General’s Office under a mobile registration exercise the Department mounted for the community, and the minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage personally visited the communities to assess progress,” Mutsvangwa said.

Some of the projects so far identified by line ministries for the San communities include goat rearing, market gardening and dam scooping.

The San have also been granted a quota system on the recruitment by security forces.

“While the Zimbabwe Republic Police and Zimbabwe Defence Forces have already completed recruitment for the current year, they have undertaken to recruit from the San communities in the forthcoming recruitment cycle.

“The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services has recently aired advertisements which they have shared with the Tjawo communities, and a quota has been reserved for them,” she said.
