Zanu PF aspiring Chegutu West constituency MP, Last Chigavazira, and two of his accomplices were arrested and later released in connection with violence and rape charges.

Reliable sources said Chigavazira was arrested in Chegutu alongside his bouncer Russell Mashongedza and ward 28 aspiring local government candidate, Tatenda Gwinji.

The case is linked to violent skirmishes involving Chigavazira and sitting legislator Dexter Nduna’s supporters ahead of the party’s primaries.

A Zanu PF supporter in Nduna’s camp was kidnapped and allegedly raped.

The case number is CR 297/03/23.

Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said he had not received the report when contacted for comment by NewsDay.

However, there was controversy after Chigavazira and his accomplices were released before the matter went to court.

According to a letter of complaint against Chegutu police addressed to Provincial Affairs minister Mary Mliswa, Nduna said: “The lady raped and brutalised has been refused the opportunity to make a police report with the DISPOL [officer commanding district] saying the Chigavariza team has come to report first, therefore, the rape report and malicious damage to the property of my team cannot be entertained.”

Chigavazira, who emerged victorious in the primaries, then denied the charges as a smear campaign.
