RENOWNED UK-based lawyer Pardon Tapfumaneyi has urged the Zimbabwean government to establish a National Democracy Day.
He believes this initiative would promote awareness of democratic values, which are essential for development and the protection of human rights.
In an interview, Tapfumaneyi outlined the positive impact of such a day, suggesting it could be a catalyst for progress in Zimbabwe.
“A stable and transparent democracy is fundamental for development. By recognizing Democracy Day, Zimbabwe can fully realize its potential, safeguarding human rights through democratic governance,” he stated.
Tapfumaneyi also called for the recognition of Democracy Day throughout Africa, encouraging nations to adopt democratic principles to enhance governance and empower their citizens.
“It is crucial that we celebrate Democracy Day across Africa. Governments should integrate this observance into educational institutions to foster a culture of democracy,” he explained. He acknowledged the unique challenges facing democracy in Africa but emphasized that a robust democratic system strengthens electoral processes and ensures fair elections.
He further highlighted the importance of active citizen involvement in governance, advocating for a clear separation of powers, judicial independence, and the rule of law as vital components of a healthy democracy.
“Active participation is essential. We must ensure that the judiciary is independent and that every citizen is held accountable to the law,” Tapfumaneyi asserted.
“Promoting Democracy Day will enhance governance, unity, and economic growth. Strong democratic foundations attract investors who are assured their rights are upheld.”
In a related note, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his message for Democracy Day, addressed the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in governance. He warned of the risks AI poses to democracy, such as the spread of disinformation, while also recognizing its potential to enhance democratic engagement.
“AI can promote public participation, equality, and security, enriching civic spaces and improving education on democratic processes,” Guterres stated.
However, he stressed the importance of governing AI effectively to mitigate its risks to democracy.
The International Day of Democracy serves as a crucial reminder of the need to uphold free speech, civil liberties, and the rule of law, ensuring that institutions remain accountable and human rights are protected.
