The Zambezi Times is a non-political online news outlet formed with the chief mandate being to main stream development and progress in Matabeleland North.
The province is suffering from calamitous poverty, underdevelopment, marginalization and misery. Most of Matabeleland North people are poor villagers surviving from hand to mouth. The infrastructure in the province is dilapidated. The schools and clinics are in dire state. Unemployment is rife.
Yet and indeed ironical, the province boasts of the iconic Victoria Falls, which is one of the seven wonders of the whole world.
It also has a beautiful Hwange National Park which contributes forex greatly to the fiscus, through tourism earnings. The park has the big five and it is only one of the few in the whole world to boast of such.
The province has the Zambezi River which has created maritime business for a lot of people.
Much more, there is immense timber in the province that is exploited by people from all over the country.
Suffice to say, Lupane District has high quality underground gas reserves that have not been utilized.
Also, the Binga beach largely remains underutilized.
Against all this, and juxtaposing all the natural resources such as timber, the Big Five and world renowned tourist attractions with the poverty ONE question springs to the mind: ‘where are we getting it wrong?
This is where The Zambezi Times comes to offer breath of fresh air and an outlet advocating for development in Matabeleland North.
This publications seeks to shine its light on developmental and community issues, raising awareness and allowing for stakeholders to make progressive decisions.
Issues such as poor farming methods, lack of access to clean water, no electricity, shortages of proper schools and clinics and high poverty rates are some of topics that will be the mainstay on this outlet.
This publication also seeks to tackle climate change issues and its effects in our communities. For several years the province has had to contend with debilitating droughts which have been linked with climate change.
Furthermore, The Zambezi Times seeks to give voice to the marginalized groups on the periphery of the society such as Tonga and Lozvi people.
In order for the province to fully develop its citizens should enjoy the economic benefits of their resources and this is what we believe in as a media house.
As our name indicate, just like the iconic Zambezi River, we intend to snake all the places in the province, exposing corruption and rot while concomitantly empowering the people. It is for this reason that our motto is: doing the greatest good to the greatest number of people. Umthunywa Akala Mpontshi. We are here to serve the people.
