Zimbabweans Tear into Obert Mpofu

Zimbabweans Tear into Obert Mpofu STAFF WRITER ZIMBABWEANS have torn into Zanu PF mandarin Obert Mpofu, expressly telling him there is nothing to be proud of about the country, while accusing him of corruption. Mpofu, unwittingly courted the stinging and ruthless attacks on him and his party, after he asked Zimbabweans on micro blogging site, Twitter to post what evokes in them 'national pride and bona fide love for Zimbabweans'. Declaring that the engagement is a 'no holds barred' he asked Zimbabweans to field questions on any subject and he will respond frankly. But, unforeseen to him, this drew a range of insults and controversial questions, which underlined the deep hatred that Zimbabweans have for the ruling party. Mpofu could not respond to any of the questions. Some accused Mpofu of corruption, while others lashed out over Gukurahundi. Tatenda Kajau asked "It has been insinuated that you are corrupt and have gained massive properties in Vic Falls and Byo (Bulawayo) through illicit means. May you kindly respond to these allegations"? While Tino Dhehwa Mabwe said "Sei uri mbavha iwewe? U hinyepa uchiti hausati wamboona ma diamond (Why are you a thief? You lied and said you have never seen a diamond". Mpofu has been accused of stupefying corruption during his tenure as mines minister during the inclusive government, with reports saying he amassed a lot of properties during that era. There were reports of looting of diamonds at Chiadzwa fields, Mutare and late President Robert Mugabe once claimed that over US$15 billion worth of diamonds were stolen. However, Mpofu has fought back and insisted that his wealth is accredited to hard work and immaculate business acumen. Some Zimbabweans said they are not proud of Zimbabwe because of Gukurahundi. "Ayikho nje mkhulu into engipride ngayo since ngazalwa ngazalelwa phezu kwegukurahundi ngayibuka ngisese ngumfanyana till today we are oppressed by you and your friends (l have nothing to be proud of about Zimbabwe because l was born into Gukurahundi and l witnessed it as a child and today you and your friends are still oppressing us)," said one Twitter user. Pat Dube asked "When are you going to push Mnangagwa to address the Gukurahundi issue"? Zimbabweans are emotive about Gukurahundi, a genocide that targeted Ndebele speaking people in Matabeleland and Midlands regions by the state led by Zanu PF. Mnangagwa was said to be the enforcer of the tribal cleansing, while Mpofu jumped ship to Zanu PF from Zapu before the disturbances occured. Some asked what projects Mpofu has done for Matabeleland. "What projects are you involved in that seek to develop Matabeleland," said Sbo Kamadlenya Sanibonani Mpofu. The Zanu PF secretary for administration hails from Matabeleland North, Hwange and was a long-time governor for the county. He once claimed that he was the King of Matabeleland.
