HWANGE town is apprehensive of a second wave of the deadly Corona pestilence, warning that it does not have sufficient resources to deal with the respiratory disease.
In a statement, Hwange Local Board (HLB) said the re-opening of the tourism sector by the government and the resumption of intercity bus services has exposed the tourism town to the pangs of the virus.
“Hwange District remains one of the areas highly susceptible to COVID-19, worse now with the country having fully reopened its tourism sector and the return of inter-city bus services,” HLB said.
“Hwange is one of the country’s biggest resort areas thus the reopening of the tourism sector is likely to see an increase in the number of tourists from various destinations.”
The government re-opened tourism activities and intercity bus services in recent months as it relaxed its forced Covid-19 restrictions.
However, the country has been hit by a second wave of the virus with infections spiking and death rates increasing.
According to the ministry of Health, Corona virus cases have surpassed 9000.
The HLB further said it does not have sufficient resources to tackle the Corona disease.
“However, the Rapid Response Team, which comprises of the local authority’s health department and the Ministry of Health and Child Care is facing serious challenges due to lack of adequate resources, which include transport and testing kits,” said HLB.
But, on the good side, the resort town’s isolation centre is almost complete.
“The District’s isolation centre at Five Mile Hospital has been fully rehabilitated and almost ready for use with only a few plumbing works being outstanding,” said HLB.
“In essence the centre is ready for commission.”
The local board said it continues to raise awareness and encourage residents to adhere to Covid-19 regulations.
Said HLB: “Hwange continues to sensitise residents to fully observe COVID-19 health and safety regulations in order to minimise the spread of the disease.
“Furthermore, Hwange continues to fumigate premises, which includes offices and social amenities facilities (clinic, bar and schools) after every fortnight.”
