…as myths continue to take center stage

HORDES of people in the greater marginalised Binga district say they are in the dark about the Covid-19 vaccination.
This comes at a time there have been lots of myths and conspiracy theories surrounding the vaccines which are meant to effectively curb the spread of the pandemic.
However, while government has through mainstream media urged people to take the jab, the information gap has left rural areas and other remote districts sidelined.
Some villagers and residents in Binga who spoke to this publication said they were not ready to take the jab as they have heard lots of bad stories about them. Some said they were totally in the dark about what vaccines are.
“People know about Covid-19 but on the vaccine part of it there is no right or true information about it. What I can say is people are just not yet ready to take the vaccine in other words there has been no good information about the vaccine,” said Samson Sibanda, chairman of Binga District Residents Association (BDRA).
Asked if there has been any effort by government or stakeholders to raise awareness about the vaccine in Binga, Sibanda said: “a little is being done.”
President Mnangagwa said the vaccination of citizens will start this week following the arrival of 200 000 doses of vaccines from China yesterday.
Zimbabwe has also purchased 600 000 jabs from China that are expected to be delivered next month while more will be purchased from Russia. The country has set aside US$100 million to buy Covid-19 vaccines.
Frontline health workers, ports of entry officials and funeral parlour workers will be among the first to be vaccinated for Covid-19.
