OPPOSITION leader Harry Wilson has called for a stricter lockdown as he raised fears of a Covid-19 third wave hitting the country.
Health experts have warned that a third wave of Covid-19 was imminent unless a stricter lockdown is enforced.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa relaxed Covid-19 lockdown regulations, allowing even informal traders to resume operations but guarded by World Health Organization (WHO) measures.
However, Wilson called on Mnangagwa to review the relaxed lockdown with a view of enforcing tighter measures to avert a third wave.
“ I personally feel that the idea to ease regulations to this level was rushed,” Wilson, a losing 2018 presidential candidate said yesterday.
“I am fully aware that President Mnangagwa was in a tight corner to balance between the economy, survival of the people and the spread of the disease, but this level of lockdown is certainly going to backfire sooner than later.”
Wilson who leads the Democrat Opposition Party (DOP) urged government to speed up the Vaccination exercise following the delivery of more Chinese vaccines on Tuesday.
“Government itself has indicated that its faith is now in vaccines, and we believe the same, as a result I think it was going to be wise to first have at least 5 million people vaccinated, before allowing people to mingle and mix the way they are doing. It’s now obvious that sooner or later cases of infections will shoot up.”
Government yesterday received 200 000 vaccines donated by China and a further 144 000 doses it bought from Sinopharm.
