THE deadly Covid-19 pandemic has continued to hit the country hard claiming 30 more people in the last 24 hour-cycle with a total of 322 testing positive to the virus, latest Health and Child Care ministry report reveals.
The reports shows that Harare recorded the highest number of deaths (14) followed by Mashonaland East and Masvingo which recorded four each. Bulawayo and Midlands recorded three fatalities each while Manicaland and Mashonaland Central had one death each.
Sadly, of the 321 new cases only one is from a returnee, indicating a surge in local transmissions.
“322 new cases and 30 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours. 321 are local cases and 1 is a returnee from Botswana,” read the statement.
“Harare recorded a total of 118 new cases which is the highest amongst the ten provinces. A total of 1485 PCR tests were conducted during the last 24 hours. 640 new recoveries were recorded bring the recovery rate to 60.7%.”
As of January 17, the country recorded a total of 9978 active cases while all in all 27203 cases have been recorded to this date.
So far the disease has recorded 713 deaths.
The second wave of the pandemic has left government with no choice but to impose yet another strict lockdown in a bid to contain the spread of the disease which has claimed ordinary and influential people in the country.
