Arts views with Thabani H Moyo
SINAZO has been nominated for the best group award for the PPC Zimbabwe Music awards for 2021. This is the second year running that the group has been recognised by the awards organisers.
The nomination does not only need to be celebrated by the group and their followers but it also affirms that the outfit is taking their music business seriously. Speaking from his United Kingdom base their leader Titshabona Tish Malaba could not hide his elation about their nomination for ZIMA2021. For the lanky Malaba to be nominated for two consecutive years ‘is not only an honour but also shows consistency from Sinazo.’
“I am happy with the nomination and would like to thank everyone who has supported us. To the ZIMA2021 thank you with gratitude. But the thing that counts the most with me is the friendships, the love and sheer joy shared with my team when making music,” said Tish Malaba.
Sinazo was formed in 2013. Some of the members are Trevor Ncube who is the manager, Percy Dalubuhle Mpofu who is the producer, the vocalists Khally S Sibanda and Lorraine Sibanda. Sinazo was formed with huge task of promoting Kalanga culture in general and Kalanga language in particular. “We are the pioneers of the Kalanga house music genre in Zimbabwe. Our first album entitled Kalanga culture love was well received in Zimbabwe and beyond borders particularly in Botswana,” says Tish Malaba with a chuckle.
The track Kalanga child went on to win the best song by a group in Skyz Metro Fm Awards. The song also went on to be nominated twice for best production and the best house in the BAA and Skyz Metro Awards. The second album by the group is Kalanga House and has tracks like Mandiziba and Loba lumbo which have done well in several charts.
Sinazo has also collaborated with various artists that include Hwabaraty, Tkp Ndlunkulu, Iyasa, DJ Dash, Gabz Fire and SA Kwaito Star Bryon Khumalo. In 2019 the group released another Album Drums of Matopos with singles like Amina and Drums of Matopos receiving significant airplay. This evident that Sinazo is contributing immensely towards Zimbabwean music in general and Bulawayo music in particular.
“The messages in the songs have touched many people and as a group we continue to receive touching messages of gratitude from various parts of the globe,’ acknowledges Malaba. The group is working on its upcoming album entitled Kalanga House Vol. 2. The group plans to put up tours after the lockdown. On his parting shots Malaba had this to say to other artists, “Big it up to everyone who spends part of their time creating anything whether it’s writing a book, making film, painting, creating a dance, a piece of theatre or a piece of music. You are legend.”
Titshabona Tish Malaba is himself an accomplished educationist, academic, writer, administrator, musician and filmmaker. Apart from producing music he is also working on a big film project Igazi labafo set to be shot in South Africa and Zimbabwe.H Moyo
